HARLEY
Harley is a very sweet guy who was adopted a little over a year ago. His forever family absolutely adores him. He has had problems with ringbone in the past, and the last few months he has been losing weight. Despite their efforts and the vet’s guidance, he just can’t seem to keep any weight on him. They fear he may have cancer. The twinkle in his eyes is gone, and it is with a heavy heart that we say he will be humanely euthanized this afternoon. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as they face this difficult decision.

HOPE AND GRACE
Mama and baby now have names. Yay! Hope (baby) and Grace (mama). I shot this video Tuesday (08/10/10) evening while I was at the rescue for a board meeting. Hope had a little pep in her step. Enjoy!!

PRECIOUS TWO
On July 29th we received a precious mare and foal. Mama was severely undernourished, and had no milk to provide for her little filly. Baby is four months old, but more the size of a two week old when she arrived at HITVERAS. Here she is the day she arrived...
Mama and Baby (who as yet have not been named) have been with us just a couple weeks now, and both are thriving. Mama has a full milk sac now, and Baby is nursing - and eating grain. They are both gaining weight. Baby could barely walk when they arrived. She is becoming quite a spunky little spitfire.

MILLIE'S MAMA
We love when we are able to adopt our rescue horses and donkeys into a forever home. Sometimes it is extra special. Millie is a Paint mare who was abandoned in the county a few years back. She was a very nervous horse, and didn't seem too trusting of people. We had a couple volunteers who really took her under their wing, and helped her learn to trust. We loved seeing Millie come out of her shell. They did end up adopting her, but due to some hardships she came back to the rescue. Lucky for Millie, someone else soon came along and just fell in love with her. They knew there was something special about her. It's been said that a picture can say a thousand words. See for yourself...

FOREVER HOMES
What a wonderful adoption day we had this past Saturday!! We also had a garage sale. We still have lots of great things - and we'll be having the garage sale again this week. Thursday and Friday. Come on out!! All proceeds from the garage sale go directly to the horses.
Here is a pic of Caitlin and Duke (and Emma & Cali). Caitlin is adopting Duke. They will make a great pair!!
Also adopted this weekend... Twister, Dixie, Phoenix, Bart and Eeyore. There are two others who had someone fall in love with them... hopefully they will soon be adopted as well. I'll be sure and let you know when that happens!!

WORK DAY
We had a work day at the rescue yesterday. It was definitely a hot summer day, but thankfully there was a nice breeze, and we got LOTS done! There is always work to be done, but this one was extra special. This Saturday, June 26, is our very first "Adopt-A-Days". Starting at 9AM. We are also having a garage sale that same day... starting at 7AM. If you have any items you would like to get rid of, feel free to bring them to us. We will be setting things up Friday night. All proceeds from the garage sale will of course go straight to the HITVERAS residents.
Just in the last few weeks we have taken in two Paint's - seized from their owners due to neglect. They are both grossly underweight - and one may be pregnant; two Mini's - also underweight, and relinquished by their owner; a pony was seized from its owner, and sadly her pasture mate was also seized - but was too far gone, and had to be euthanized; and a sorrel mare - underweight and quite possibly pregnant.
We hope to have a great turnout on Saturday -- to get lots of our horses placed into their forever homes, and to have a successful garage sale. Come and see us. Find a treasure... be it a little something from the garage sale, or a big something with four legs that will love you forever.

CAP AND GAB
Last week was a sad one at the rescue. We lost Captain, and Gabriella.
Captain was a gelding in his 20s who came to us this past fall. He was underfed, and neglected, at that time. He was gaining weight, and doing well. We aren't exactly sure what happened other than he got kicked. We put him in a pen by himself so that he could recuperate, but he ended up going down and we couldn't get him back up. He was in pain, and so the decision was made to let him go.
Gabriella was stillborn on Thursday. Sally, her mama is a pony, and judging by the size of Gabriella - her daddy was definitely not a pony. We are lucky to have not lost Sally during the birthing process. On the bright side, we are happy to report that Sally has been adopted, and will be going to her forever home soon.
